James J. Nestor
James J. Nestor is an artist, photographer, museum professional, and visual storyteller who has spent more than 25 years helping people experience art—from behind the scenes in museums to behind the lens of a camera.
Currently an Associate Preparator at the Carnegie Museum of Art, James specializes in the installation, handling, and care of artwork, combining technical precision with an artist's eye for presentation. His career has taken him through museum collections, conservation projects, newspaper newsrooms, galleries, and artists' studios, giving him a uniquely broad perspective on how art is created, documented, preserved, and shared.
As a longtime multimedia journalist and videographer for the Indiana Gazette, James earned numerous Keystone Press and Pennsylvania Associated Press awards for photography, documentary video, and visual storytelling. Through his freelance business, Nestor Photography and Fine Art, he has documented artwork, assisted with conservation projects, and photographed everything from museum collections to community events.
James holds multiple degrees from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he focused on sculpture, multimedia, photography, and printmaking. His own artwork has been exhibited throughout Pennsylvania, in New York City, and internationally in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he participated in an artist residency and the renowned 1999 Sarajevo Winter Festival.
Whether he's installing a major exhibition, creating award-winning visual journalism, conserving cultural objects, or making art of his own, James is driven by curiosity, craftsmanship, and the belief that every object—and every story—deserves thoughtful attention. He enjoys solving creative problems, working with talented teams, and occasionally convincing impossible installations to become possible.
